Thomas Bjorn bagged his 11th European tour title on Sunday at the Qatar masters, shooting a bogey-free, 3-under-69 to rack up a tour total of 14-under-274. He made three birdies in the final round, with one birdie on the 18th round. Spanish golfer Alvaro Quiros was following closely behind, closing between two shots of the lead by shooting a birdie on the 14th hole. Quiros also bogeyed two of the final four holes, putting three shot on the 15th hole. The two leads were followed by Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Marks Brier, who was the leading player in the second round.
Bjorn credits the win to his solid play, which didn’t start out especially well but was made up for all the birdies on the back nine. The win was made even more special with the kind of competitors out on the field which he left in the dust, such as 7th-ranked Steve Stricker and Lee Westwood.
“Well, the field this week was unbelievably strong, and you know, that shows where European Tour golf is at the moment. We have got a lot of players up there in the top 10 and a lot of them played this week. You know, that gives you a few extra points.”
Martin Kaymer, ranked at no.2 finished tying for 28th place after shooting a 1-under 71. He faltered in the opening round and by the final round was 10 shots off the lead.
