Louis Oosthuizen just gave South Africa another reason to be proud of by winning the British Open on Sunday, which was held at St. Andrews.
As Oosthuizen walked over to the Swilcan Bridge, there was never any doubt that Oosthuizen would nab the title, marking his very first Major Championship victory. However, while his country was abuzz with the droning vuvuzelas, Oosthuizen’s background music consisted of bagpipes that were produced by the Royal & Ancient clubhouse.
It can be said that Oosthuizen’s performance rivaled that of Tiger Woods, possibly one of the best known golfers in the world.
According to Oosthuizen, “To win an Open championship is special… But to win it at St. Andrews… it’s something you dream about.
The timing of Oosthuizen’s victory came at a time after South Africa just concluded the much talked about 2010 World Cup, and was the day that the great Nelson Mandela turned 92 years old. In fact, Oosterhuizen said, “It felt a bit special, really… When I walked down 18, I was thinking about his birthday.”
The victory that Oosthuizen just gained pushed him high on the World Ranks, landing him among the top players of the world. For many, this serves as a sign of how global golf has developed over the years.
