It was an emotional win for Phil Mickelson on Sunday, after making the winning shot that gained him this year’s Masters Title, the third in his career. With tears streaming down his face Mickelson made his way to his wife who was waiting in the sidelines and gave her a big hug. A tear was trickling down his face as he went back to the scoring trailer where he signed for the lowest score made in Augusta in nine years.
Despite the publicity that came with the participation of the embattled Tiger Woods, it was clear that the game belonged to Mickelson who captured the three-shot victory over Lee Westwood with the final birdie for a 5-under 67. Prior to the winning birdie Mickelson also made two par saves from the trees and followed this up with a 15 foot birdie.
The presence of his wife undoubtedly made this win a victory like no other. Amy Mickelson has not been in a single tournament of Phil’s since she was diagnosed with cancer 11 months ago, and Phil Mickelson himself had expressed that he would have understood if she skipped this one.
“I wasn’t sure if she was going to be there,” he said.
“We’ve been through a lot this year. It means a lot to share some joy together,” Mickelson, his voice full of emotion, said at the green jacket ceremony. “It’s been such an incredible week, an emotional week. And to cap it off with a victory is something I can’t put into words.”
This win brings Mickelson to the circle of golfers currently holding at least three Masters Titles.
