Current world No. 2 Phil Mickelson plans to join the PGA Tour just in time for the US Open.phil mickelson

In May, Mickelson announced that he will be suspending his playing schedule indefinitely to allow him to spend time with his wife Amy who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Test results, however, have given the Mickelson’s hope that the cancer was caught early. More tests to help determine Amy Mickelson’s condition will be done over the next month.

Mickelson plans to rejoin the PGA Tour at the St Jude Championships in Memphis. He will them move on to play at Bethpage Black for the US Open.

“We heard there was a possibility he would play,” Phil Cannon, a spokesman for the St. Jude Championship said. “That would be great.”

In support of Amy, the PGA Tour wives’ association encouraged officials and fans to wear pink.

“Every time we see a player, caddy, announcer or fan wearing pink, we are overwhelmed by the love and support we feel” wrote Amy on her husband’s website.

Her treatment and recovery will most likely dictate whether or not Mickelson would play in the British Open. The couple had initially expected that Amy would undergo surgery a few weeks after a diagnosis was made. That, however, was pushed back another month.

The US Open starts on June 15, 2008 and the British Open is set to begin on July 16.
