Tokyo, Japan - With his wife’s prodding Jeev Milkha Singh competed in the Nippon Series Cup, the season ending event of the Japanese Tour, and ultimately went home with the prize Sunday. This was five days after his wife Kudrat Singh delivered their first child, a stillborn.
While his wife was recuperating at a local hospital after the delivery of the stillborn baby, Singh was playing at the par-70 Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club course, where he totaled a six-under 134 which opened with a one-stroke lead for him while opponents Toshinori Moto and Katsumasa Miyamoto followed closely at his heels. Singh had earlier won the event in 2006.
He made a six-under 64 on Thursday which was followed by an even-par round with five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. He closed the deal on Sunday with a 4-under 66 for a total of 12-under 268.
“I will dedicate this win to my wife,” Singh said after his victory. “Better things are on the way,” he added. A month earlier Singh had won his second Asian Tour money title after defeating Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington with just one stroke in the Singapore Open. Other wins for this year include the Bank Austria Open title in June and the Sega Sammy Cup which he won in July.
