Steve Smith
Wide receiver Stevonne Latrall Smith played his college ball first for Santa Monica College and then for the University of Utah. He was a round three pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. The Carolina Panthers made him the 77th overall choice.
At Utah, Smith was an outstanding receiver, averaging 20.6 yards per catch. He was All-Mountain West Conference two years straight.
With Carolina, he has been an outstanding player, being selected to the Pro Bowl three times (2001, 2005, 2006) and an All-Pro twice (2001 and 2005). In 2005, he was chosen as the Co-NFL Comeback Player of the Year after coming back from an injury that he received in the first game of the 2004 season.
In seven seasons, Smith has played in 92 games, making 431 receptions for 5,927 yards, 37 touchdowns and 257 first downs. He has fumbled five times, losing one. Smith has averaged 13.8 YPC.
Although he stands just five-foot-nine and weighs 185 pounds, Smith shows excellent speed and dynamic quickness. He knows how to avoid the press and is skilled in separating from one-on-one coverage. His second gear is awe-inspiring and he's exceptional at making acrobatic catches. His routes can be sloppy at times, but his catching and running abilities are unquestionable. Although he was utilized as a punt return man early in his career, due to his excellent field vision and speed, he's rarely used in that capacity now.
