Presently a free agent, Darrell Hackney was signed by the Cleveland Browns in 2006. After playing his college ball for University of Alabama at Birmingham, quarterback Darrell went undrafted and was with the team as an unrostered player and cut before the start of the season. In 2007, he joined the Denver Broncos. He is their third-string QB.

At UAB, he set numerous school records, including most passing yards (9,886 yards), touchdowns (71), completions (694) and total offense per game (243.4 YPG). In 2002, he was designated as a C-USA All-Freshman and as Sporting News C-USA Freshman of the Year.

On 2nd January, 2007, he was signed by the Broncos where he spent time at the training camp. Here, he got a chance to compete with Patrick Ramsey and Preston Parsons, for the backup quarterback position. On 31st August, 2008, he signed with the practice squad of the Broncos and got promoted to the active roster on 1st of November that year. By 6th April, 2009, he was waived by the team and joined Winnipeg Blue Bombers team on 28th May, 2009. After few days, on 8th June, 2009, he was released by the Bombers.

He signed with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League, though was released on 26th September, prior to the 2009 season.

Hackney, who has seen no action as a pro, seems to have more of a downside than an up. He's got a strong arm and is able to air the ball out but is inaccurate and prone to throwing picks. He's also small (five-foot-eleven) and slow for an NFL signal caller.
