AFC Wild-Card Playoff Preview

The first AFC playoff game of the 2008- 2009 NFL post season will be played at 8:00 pm ET on Saturday, January 3, 2009, as the Indianapolis Colts (12- 4) and San Diego Chargers (8- 8) meet in San Diego.

The Chargers are the AFC West champs, while the Colts finished second in the AFC South, earning a Wild-Card berth. Here are the teams that made the post-season. The Tennessee Titans (13- 3), who secured the top spot in the AFC South, have a first-round bye and home-field advantage. The Titans beat the Colts when they first met but lost to Indy in the final game of this season 23- 0.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) have again taken the AFC North. They get a first-round bye. But there’s concern for the Steelers’ as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suffered a concussion in quarter two of the last regular-season game. Roethlisberger was injured in a meaningless contest as Pittsburgh was finishing off the season versus the last-place Cleveland Browns. Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback does have a bye week, which will allow him time to recover.

The Miami Dolphins (11- 5) are the AFC North title-holders. The Dolphins, who went from 1-15 last season to division champs this year, will play the Baltimore Ravens (11- 5), who earned a Wild-Card berth. The San Diego Chargers (8- 8) took the AFC West. As noted, they will play the Wild-Card Indianapolis Colts (12- 4)

The Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, and Denver Broncos all missed the 2008- 2009 post-season.
