Powerplay refers to the number of overs that have fielding restrictions in One Day International cricket matches. The rule was introduced in 2005 to ensure that the cricket teams scored runs in order to make the game competitive and interesting. There are a total of 20 powerplay overs, these are divided into 10 at the beginning of the innings and two set of 5 overs at the discretion of the fielding captain. If the fielding captain does not ask the umpire for the 2nd and 3rd powerplay, these are observed in the last overs of the match.
