Team profile
England Lions Cricket team
The England Lions Cricket team is the newly rebranded team which was formerly known as the England A team. It represents England and Wales as the ‘second tier’ team at the International level beneath the full England Cricket team. The motive of the formation of this kind of a team is to give an International exposure to promising young cricketers so that they are ready for a call up from their National side anytime.
In early days of its formation the team was intended to tour around the world and play with other national teams. In 1990s they played one match in their country itself at the start of every season. From 1992- 1995 they played against the previous season’s county champion and in 1996-1997 against the Rest of England team.
The England Lions (England A) have toured many countries in the past such as West Indies, India, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. There they have competed against the domestic sides in the respective domestic formats of the game.
Many players of this team have been picked up to represent the National side. Some of the players include Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott and Sajid Mahmood.
