Mark James Chilton is a professional English cricketer who currently plays for Lancashire County Cricket Club. He was born on October 2, 1976 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Quite an all-rounder performer, Chilton is a solid right handed opening batsman and a right arm medium fast bowler.
Chilton’s batting style has often been compared with his schoolmate and former England and Lancashire batsman, John Crawley.
Chilton was educated at Manchester Grammar School and later at Durham University where he was a part of the winning team of British Universities tournament in 1997. His debut for Lancashire came the same year at an age of 20.
In September 2004, Mark Chilton was given the captain’s cap of Lancashire after Warren Hegg resigned after being demoted to County Championship Division Two.
As a Lancashire skipper, Chilton’s success included leading the team to promotion in the Championship and also the final of the Twenty20 Cup. However, they lost to Somerset Sabres in the match played at The Oval. Some people feel that Chilton’s decision of batting first in the overcast conditions led to their loss.
Chilton resigned as the captain of Lancashire towards the end of 2007 after three years of services. Although the team had won only one trophy under his captaincy, they gave a close fight on several occasions and just missed out on 2 County Championship titles, 2 Twenty20 cups, and also the C&G Trophy.
