Born on 30th September 1974 in London Ben Phillips is a professional English cricketer. He currently plays for the Somerset County Cricket Club. He has also played for Kent from 1993 to 2002 and Northamptonshire from 2002 to 2006. An all-rounder performer, James is a right-handed batsman who also bowls at fast-medium pace.

Ben Phillips started his cricket career at Kent and appeared for their Second XI team regularly in the late 1990s. His first-class debut came in a game against Sussex early in 2006 taking 4 wickets for 56 runs in the match. He could not take any wicket in the following game against Leicestershire and had just one more first-class appearance in that particular season. In spite of having scored his first century in first-class game against Lancashire in 1997 and grabbing five wickets twice in an innings, he was not included in the team for the first-class match towards the end of the 1998 season. He had scored twenty seven appearances for Kent. He was a regular player for the Second XI of Kent between 1999 and 2001. He also participated in a spell of 3 one-day games for the first team.

In 2002, Philips joined Northamptonshire but became a regular member of the first team only by 2004. He got the county cap in 2005. In fifty three first-class appearances for Northamptonshire, Philips averaged about 23 runs while batting whereas his bowling average was about 31. His top score for Northamptonshire was 90 runs against Warwickshire and his best bowling figures were 6 wickets for 29 runs against Cambridge University.

Philips asked to be released from Northamptonshire at the end of the 2006 season due to personal reasons. He joined Somerset club in the next season. With a career hampered with injury, Philips has been considered more of a squad player since 2009.
