Born in South Africa, Peter Stephanus de Villiers is a former cricketer who was fondly known as Fanie. He was a right armed medium pacer and a right-handed batsman for the South African national cricket team.
Growing up in Transvaal in South Africa, Fanie played first class cricket for the first time in 1985-86 for the team Northern Transvaal B. He took five wickets for 33 runs in the second innings of his debut first class match. He played for the Northern Transvaal until 1998 after which he joined Kent county cricket club in 1990. He played a total of 102 first class matches and 173 List A matches of which he scored 1,687 runs and 519 runs respectively.
In 1993-94, Fanie was selected for the South African test team to tour Australia. He went unnoticed in the first test but in the second test, he scored match-winning figures with 6 wickets for 43 runs. This marvelous feat contributed to his 10 wickets for 123 runs score and earned him the Man of the Match award. In the third test of the series, he stood guarding the wickets as a nightwatchman for 198 minutes and scored 30 runs.
Fanie has played a total of 18 tests and 83 one day international matches scoring a total of 359 runs and 170 runs respectively. His bowling averages for the same are 24.27 and 27.74 correspondingly.
After his retirement from professional cricket, Fanie joined the South African commentary team. He was also one of the judges at the 1995 Miss World pageant at Sun City.
