In February 2006, Yusuf Abdulla debuted in first class cricket for KwaZulu Natal. Further, he was made a part of the Rest of South Africa squad to play against Pakistan. In 2007, he was selected in the South Africa A squad for the Indian tour and he performed nicely. So, he was selected in the Twenty20 match against Australia in 2009. Here, he took 1 wicket for 16 runs.
During the IPL 2009 season, Jerome Taylor, the West Indian fast bowler, had to suffer a vehicle accident. So, his franchisee, Kings XI Punjab signed Yusuf Abdulla as a replacement for Taylor. This was a successful move as midway through the tournament, he became the leading wicket taker. This performance resulted in his selected for the ICC World Twenty20 squad.
During the 2007-08 season of the Pro20, he made 10 dismissals at an average of 13.40. In the shorter form of the game, Abdulla was the main strike bowler of the Dolphins.
