Prasanna Jayawardene debuted in Test cricket against Pakistan at Kandy (Asgiriya Stadium) from 28th June to 2nd July 2000. In the 1st innings, he did not get a chance to bat. In this match, Sri Lanka played its 1st innings till the end of the fifth day and collected 467 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. This match resulted in a draw. Jayawardene played his first One day International on 4th April 2003 at Sharjah (Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium) and the opponent was Pakistan. In this match, he was sent to bat at the No. 7 batting spot but was bowled on the very first delivery he faced. This match was won by Pakistan by 7 wickets with 16 balls to spare.
