Romesh Kaluwitharana was a former Sri Lankan international cricketer, who was wicketkeeper as well as right-handed batsman.

He represented Sri Lanka, along with Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club, Galle Cricket Club and Colts Cricket Club. He is best known for being a pinch-hitting opening batsman who helped Sri Lanka win the 1996 World Cup.

Career

Kaluwitharana’s debut Test match was played at Colombo against Australia from August 1992. He played 49 Test matches, without ever reaching any great heights, scoring 1,933 runs at 26.12 with two centuries, with 93 catches and 26 catches.

He made his name in One-Day International, particularly around Sri Lanka's World Cup triumph in 1996, revolutionising the role of wicketkeepers.

He debuted for Sri Lanka in ODIs in 1990, often batting down the order but throwing away his wicket. In 1995-96, he was elevated to open alongside Sanath Jarasuriya given he relished facing pace bowling and became an effective opening batsman who scored quickly.

His international career ended in 2005.
