Hasantha Fernando is right arm medium fast bowler and a right handed batsman with the Sri Lankan cricket team. He has also played for the Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club, Chilaw Marians Cricket Club and the Basnahira South cricket teams.
Fernando started playing first class cricket since 2001. He made his debut in International cricket in a One day International match against Bangladesh at Colombo in 2002. Fernando claimed the wicket of Alok Kapali and gave away 24 runs in the 5 overs that he bowled. He also remained not out at 16 runs from 26 balls before Sri Lanka won the match by 5 wickets.
The same year in November, Fernando played his first test match against South Africa in Johannesburg. Though he was caught out for a duck in the first innings by Kirsten off a ball by Kallis, Fernando claimed 3 wickets in 21 overs and gave away just 63 runs. In the second innings he was once again dismissed for a duck on a leg before wicket appeal by Elworthy. South Africa won the match by an innings and 64 runs. In 2003, he was chosen to play in the World Cup Sri Lankan team and later in the Twenty20 World Championships.
In a total of 7 One day International matches, Fernando has scored 43 runs and claimed 6 wickets at an economy of 4.07 runs per over. He also has a total of 38 runs and 4 wickets at an economy of 2.76 runs per over in the 2 test matches that he has played.
