George Porter
George Porterimage:George Porter |George Porter was an English cricket player who used to play first class cricket for Derbyshire cricket team between the period of 1881 to 1896. Born in Kilburn in Derbyshire, George spent his summer as a professional cricketer. He made his debut in cricket with the Northwood Club, in 1880.
By 1881, he was playing for the South Derbyshire Club. The same year, he played one match for the Derbyshire team against Lancashire team when he took a wicket in the first innings itself though he did not play for the club until 1888. In 1882, he played for Birkenhead park, in 1883-84, he played for Wigan and in 1885, he played for Lowerhouse. Other teams include Grimsby in 1886 and Longsight from 1887 to 1889.
By 1888, he rejoined the Derbyshire team and played three games and one game in 1889. From 1890 onwards, he played in regular basis for this team and from 1890 to 1892, he played for Broughton team. It was in 1894 that he got a chance to play as first class and took 5-14 whilst playing against Leicestershire. By 1895, the club was back in the County Championship and George made six 5 wicket innings. His top score was 93 against Nottinghamshire. He was also an umpire in first class games held between 1899 and 1903.
