Leslie Fletcher Townsendimage:Leslie Townsend cricket|Leslie Townsend cricket was an English cricket player who used to play as an all rounder for the Derbyshire cricket team from 1922 to 1939. He even played for the England team from 1929 to 1934 and for the Auckland New Zealand team from 1934 to 1936.

Leslie didn’t have any interest in cricket until he saw George Gunn, the star batsman of Nottinghamshire playing the game. Les played cricket for his native county, Derbyshire in 1922 and even obtained a regular place in 1924.

It was in 1925, when he scored more than 800 runs of 18 average and 59 being his best score, he got placed in the fourth place in the average of the county. As a bowler, he developed various bowling skills in 1926 and took six for 32 against Nottinghamshire and 9 for 36 against the same team.

This leading all rounder for the Derbyshire team was at his peak as the most deadly bowler that the team has produced. He had the capability to turn the ball back from the off due to his perfect strength. This enterprising middle order batsman set the long standing records for many centuries for the Derbyshire team in 1933. It was in 1993 that he expired at the age of 89 at Nelson in New Zealand.
