John Hulme
John Joseph Hulme was a prominent English cricketer known for his impressive career with the Derbyshire County Cricket Club during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born on November 5, 1883, in Church Gresley, Derbyshire, Hulme made his first-class debut in 1887 and quickly established himself as a talented left-arm medium-fast bowler.
Career
Hulme's journey began with Derbyshire, where he showcased his skills in the inaugural match against the illustrious Marylebone Cricket Club. In his debut, he claimed two wickets, setting the tone for a productive season. Despite Derbyshire losing their first-class status that year, Hulme's potential shone brightly. In 1888, he represented the England National Cricket Team against the formidable Australia National Cricket Team, where he took the most wickets for his team, including a remarkable 15 wickets in a single match against Yorkshire.Following his time with Derbyshire, Hulme joined the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1889, continuing to play until 1895. Over his career, he accumulated an impressive tally of 557 first-class wickets at an average of 23.99, with a career-best performance of 9 for 27. Remarkably, he achieved the milestone of taking five or more wickets in an innings on 34 occasions, and he recorded over 10 wickets in a match nine times.
