William Storer was a prominent English cricket all-rounder and an accomplished football player during the late 19th century. He made his mark in cricket as a dedicated member of the Derbyshire County Cricket Club, where he played from 1887 until 1905. Over his illustrious career, Storer participated in six Test matches for the England National Cricket Team between 1897 and 1899, showcasing his talent on both domestic and international stages.

Career

Storer’s first-class cricket statistics are impressive, with over 13,000 runs to his name and more than 430 dismissals as a wicketkeeper. He was particularly known for his prowess behind the stumps, being one of the first keepers to stand up to fast bowlers. His exceptional skill as both a batsman and a wicketkeeper came at a time when such dual capabilities were rare. In 1899, he recorded a remarkable score of 216 not out against Leicestershire, setting a first-class record, and became the first player to notch two centuries against the Yorkshire team.

Playing Style

As a leg spinner, Storer contributed significantly to Derbyshire's bowling attack, claiming 232 wickets at an impressive average of 33.89. His versatility on the field made him an invaluable asset to his team, blending batting finesse with wicketkeeping expertise. Storer's ability to adapt his style to suit the demands of the game earned him recognition, including being named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1899.

Honours

Despite his talents, Storer's Test appearances were limited, often overshadowed by selectors' preference for other players like Dick Lilley. In addition to his cricketing achievements, he also dabbled in football, representing Derby County. Storer's legacy, however, remains firmly rooted in cricket, where he is remembered for his contributions to Derbyshire and his impact on the sport during a transformative era. He passed away in Derby at the age of 45, leaving behind a rich history in both cricket and football.
