Australia v South Africa 3rd Test at Perth live

It is not a scoreline that many would have predicted at the beginning of the series.

It is not a scoreline that many would have predicted at the beginning of the series. Two drawn test matches in Australia are a rarity anyway. With the series level, it is all to play for in the final test match starting from Friday at the WACA.

South Africa’s rearguard action led by Faf du Plessis’ maiden ton on debut kept the series level as Australia were frustrated on the fifth day.

The match is significant for reasons more than one. After failing in the two matches amid constant criticism, Ricky Ponting has decided to call time on his career after the Perth test. More than the lack of runs, it was the manner of his dismissals that prompted such calls and eventually decided that he will bow out in front of his home crowd.

Additionally, the match is also crucial for both teams having an eye on the ICC test rankings. Australia need a win to dethrone South Africa from the No. 1 spot.

Australia have been worried about the injury and exhaustion concerns surrounding their team. A bowling attack that failed to penetrate through the South African middle order will witness a shake up with Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus not being played due to heavy workload in the last test. Mitchell Johnson is certain to play his first test in more than a year.

In addition, Shane Watson returns to the team with Rob Quiney, who bagged a pair in the last match, axed.

South Africa too have some concerns regarding their line up with Jacques Kallis still sweating over his fitness. The all-rounder battled hard on the final day to save the match with du Plessis. Should he not be fit, Ryan McLaren will come into the team.

Vernon Philander, who missed the Adelaide test due to a niggle, is likely to be included at the expense of leg spinner Imran Tahir.

The match will be played at the WACA ground in Perth.
