Another series, another disappointment. New Zealand are just not able to find the right recipe to stem their flow of defeats at the international level. With the series already lost, they will be playing for pride and, perhaps, some momentum before the test series as they clash with Sri Lanka in the fifth ODI on Monday. The match will be played in Hambantota.
It has been a series marred by rain and relocation of matches that has frustrated both teams. But amidst everything, Sri Lanka have managed to sneak out as winners. The seven-wicket win in the last match confirmed their series win as they now hold a 3-0 unbeatable lead with one match rained out.
New Zealand can look for excuses on this tour as rains have not helped their cause. Additionally, injuries have further hampered their chances. Or, the better way, New Zealand can own up and admit that they have been short on several counts despite the circumstances.
The batting has been fragile, the bowlers even worse. Being reduced to 132-8 is the sort of performance even minnows would be unhappy with. And none of their bowlers have picked up two wickets in an innings in the series so far. Nor has anyone had three wickets cumulatively.
Sri Lanka have the series in the bag much to their satisfaction. Their batsmen have not been tested much yet Upul Tharanga has three failures to his credit. Other than that, the team bears a settled look.
With the ball, Nuwan Kulasekara continues to climb the ladder while Jeevan Mendis’ variation has been problematic for the opposing batsmen. Although not quite the sort of series Sri Lanka had in mind, they will nevertheless be content.
With the test series to follow, both teams know the importance of momentum. New Zealand desperately need an awakening while Sri Lanka would not wish to throw the gains away with a poor showing.
The match starts at 2.30pm.
