The last spot in the Super Eights is yet to be booked as Bangladesh and Pakistan are lined up to play in the last league match on Tuesday.
Bangladesh need to win by a margin to qualify while Pakistan would get through by denying them just that much.
The match still has consequence, though it looks highly unlikely for Bangladesh to inflict such a heavy defeat on Pakistan.
Pakistan got off to a winning start when their impressive performance against New Zealand culminated into a 13 run win.
Captain Mohammad Hafeez has refused to take the opposition lightly citing the fact that the team is still not through. He will once again have plenty of spin reserves to bank upon with Saeed Ajmal leading the pack.
Ajmal had four wickets to his credit against the Kiwis while Shahid Afridi and Hafeez himself made things difficult for the batsmen to score freely. Bangladesh are better players of spin but Pakistan’s batsmen will consider themselves in an even better position to score freely.
Nasir Jamshed scored a half-century while Hafeez made 43, and there were cameos by Imran Nazir and Umar Akmal. This makes for a formidable batting line up on paper.
Bangladesh on the other hand have struggled to make a mark in the major tournaments.
Ever since reaching the second round in the inaugural tournament, they have failed to register a win at all.
Against Pakistan, their biggest win was in the 50-over World Cup in 1999. The fact that they need to win by at least 46 runs if batting first makes the situation even more complex for a side that got thrashed against New Zealand.
Shakib Al Hasan, their top all-rounder, is also a doubtful starter for the match having been laid low by gastro problems that have affected several teams.
