Mumbai Indians overcame a middle-order collapse to win their fifth game in this year’s Indian Premier League against the Deccan Chargers at Hyderabad. The Mumbai Indians won by 37 runs in the end, after it had looked at one stage that the Chargers had gained control of the game. >
The Mumbai Indians began well through Davy Jacobs and Sachin Tendulkar. Jacobs overcame his form issues to post his highest IPL score of 32 that came off 20 balls. The knock included five fours and a six and when he was finally out, the score read 47/1 in the sixth over. >
Tendulkar continued to play at a similar rate, even after the fielding restrictions were up and took the score along to 70 in eight overs before the strategic time-out was called for. It turned out to be a brilliant move, as Amit Mishra got rid of Tendulkar immediately after the break.
70/1 became 70/3 when MIshra had Ambati Rayadu sweeping the ball to the square-leg fielder and soon Kieron Pollard departed without any further addition to leave the Mumbai Indians struggling at 70/4 in 9.1 overs.
Then, the pair of Rohit Sharma and Andrew Symonds saw out a few overs before they got into the act. Sharma smashed three sixes in his innings while Symonds had one big hit, but they also shared a plethora of boundaries towards the end of the innings. Sharma got to his 50, in the process smashing 24 runs in the last over of the innings to ensure that the side had managed 100 runs in the last 10 overs of the innings.
The target of 173 was much more than what Deccan Chargers would have expected to chase down at the half-way stage of the innings. With the momentum totally lost from the side, the least the side needed to have any chance of a win was a good start. Instead, what they got was Sunny Sohal and Shikhar Dhawan losing their wickets in the first six overs of the innings. Sohal was run-out while Dhawan was bowled by Malinga.
Malinga came back in his second spell to take two more wickets even as the side lost their way in the middle of the innings. The runs dried up and in the end, the side ended on 135/8 in their 20 overs.
Mumbai Indians catapulted to the top of the table with 10 points after this win while the Deccan Chargers have four points now.
