The Royal Challengers Bangalore would be wondering whether they deserved to win the game against the Chennai Super Kings after the manner in which they fielded, and to an extent, bowled. There were three crucial catches dropped and many others fumbled in the outfield and by the time the Super Kings innings ended, the side had already got to 183/5 in their 20 overs. >
Realistically, the target was beyond the reach and it did not help when the side lost Tillakaratne Dilshan in the very first over. Dilshan had departed without scoring a single run.>
Two more wickets fell for not too many scored, as both Mayank Agarwal (7) and Asad Pathan (14) departed in quick succession. By the time the pair of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers resurrected the innings, the asking rate had escalated to beyond the realms of the achievable.
Kohli’s 35 came off 28 but he was deceived by Shadab Jakati, while de Villiers made 65 (44 balls). Without too many down the order to support his cause, the Royal Challengers Bangalore went down in a hurry, being restricted to 162 in their 20 overs.
Earlier, the Chennai Super Kings were given a dashing start by the pair of Murali Vijay and Hussey. Hussey was dropped early by Mohammad Kaif, before the two hit out 27 runs in the last two overs of the fielding restriction overs. Vijay tonked Pathan for a six before being dismissed off the next ball but by then the side had got the momentum to go forward. He had made 31.
Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni contributed 20s each and they were quickfire innings to propel the side forward. What obviously helped the side was that Hussey remained at the other end, without getting out throughout the innings. He got to his half century and made an unbeaten 83 off 56 deliveries.
Unfortunately for Bangalore, the absence of Dirk Nannes hit them hard for the second time. Zaheer went for 33 in his four and apart from Daniel Vettori’s 0/23 from his four overs, there was no other bowler who stalled the Chennai scoring.
Johan van der Wath, the replacement for the Nannes went for 49 from his four while Dilshan and Ryan Ninnan conceded more than 10 per over in the game.
With this loss, the Royal Challengers Bangalore are down to three losses in their four games. Chennai have two wins from three matches.
