Sri Lanka moved to the top of the Group A standings with a comfortable 112-run victory over New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Kumar Sangakkara scored a match-winning 111 runs.>
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Sri Lanka lost both Tillakaratne Dilshan (3) and Upul Tharanga (3) early in the innings but skipper Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene added 145 runs for the third wicket. Jayawardene scored 66 runs from 90 balls with six fours while Sangakkara went on to register his first World Cup hundred. He hit 111 runs from 128 balls with 12 fours and two sixes.>
The rest of the batting fell like a pack of cards with the exception of Angelo Matthews, who scored an unbeaten 41 runs from 35 balls with four fours. Tim Southee took 3/63 off his 10 overs and Nathan McCullum picked up 2/48 as Sri Lanka finished their allotted 50 overs on 265/9. Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets for the addition of just 50 runs.
Chasing 266 runs under lights, New Zealand started well but lost both Brendon McCullum (14) and Martin Guptill (13) in quick succession. Jesse Ryder (19) and Ross Taylor added 49 runs for the third wicket but Sri Lanka hit back with three wickets for just 11 runs. Taylor top-scored with 33 runs from 55 balls with five fours and a six. Scott Styris (6) and Kane Williamson (5) fell cheaply as the New Zealand batsmen found it difficult to counter the Sri Lankan spinners.
Only James Franklin (20) and Jacob Oram (20*) reached double figures as New Zealand were dismissed for just 153 runs in the 35th over, their lowest score against Sri Lanka in the World Cups. For Sri Lanka, Muttiah Muralitharan picked up 4/25 while Ajantha Mendis picked up 2/24. Kumar Sangakkara was declared the player of the match.
