West Indies humiliated Bangladesh with a nine-wicket win in their Group B match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. Earlier, Bangladesh were shot out for just 58 runs, their lowest ever ODI score and also the lowest ever score by Test nation in the World Cups.>
Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. Tamim Iqbal (0) was dismissed off the third ball of the match and Imrul Kayes (5) departed after a brief stay at the crease. >
Only two Bangladesh batsmen got into the double figures while others failed to face the West Indian trio of Kemar Roach, Sulieman Benn and Darren Sammy. Junaid Siddique top-scored with a 27-ball 25 runs that included four fours while Mohammad Ashraful scored 11 runs off 21 balls with two fours.
Skipper Shakib Al Hasan started off well but was soon bowled by Benn for eight runs to end Bangladesh’s hopes of any revival. The hosts were all-out for 58 runs in the 19th over.
West Indies used only three bowlers and Benn was the pick of the bowlers with 4/18 off 5.5 over while Roach (3/19) and Sammy (3/21) chipped in with two wickets each.
Chris Gayle and Devon Smith added 29 runs for the first wicket before Smith (6) was bowled by Naeem Islam. That was to be the sole consolation for Bangladesh as Gayle and Darren Bravo took their team to victory with still 37.4 overs left in the game. Gayle remained unbeaten on 37 runs that came from 36 balls with six fours. Bravo scored an undefeated nine runs.
The entire match lasted for only 31.1 overs and Bangladeshi fans, unhappy with their team’s performance, started throwing the 4s and 6s signboards onto the ground. It was also reported that the West Indian team bus was also attacked by a mob after the match. The win took West Indies to the second spot in Group B with four points. Kemar Roach was declared the player of the match for his three-wicket burst.
