Sri Lanka defeated Kenya by nine wickets in their Group A match at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Lasith Malinga took his second World Cup hatrick to dismiss Kenya for a paltry 142 runs.>
Kenya won the toss and elected to bat first. Maurice Ouma (1) and Seren Waters (3) departed within the first three overs but Collins Obuya and David Obuya added 94 runs for the third wicket. >
Collins Obuya played an exact 100 balls to score his 52 runs that included four boundaries while David Obuya scored 51 runs from 106 balls with three fours. Their partnership of 94 runs is the best for the third wicket for Kenya against Sri Lanka. The previous best was the 29 runs between Steve Tikolo and Kennedy Otieno in the 2003 World Cup.
At 102/2, Kenya seemed to have heading towards a decent score but the introduction of Lasith Malinga changed the scenario for the African nation. Malinga picked up five wickets within a span of 18 deliveries, giving away 17 runs.
Malinga picked up the wickets of Tanmay Mishra (0), Peter Ongondo (0) and Shem Ngoche (0) of successive balls to record his second World Cup hatrick. Malinga finally bowled Elijah Otieno (0) to finish with figures of 6/38, the second best bowling figures for Sri Lanka in the World Cups. Kenya lost their last eight wickets for just 40 runs and were all-out for 142 runs in the 44th over.
The Sri Lankan openers added a quick 72 runs for the first wicket in eight overs. Tillakaratne Dilshan played an aggressive innings of 44 runs that came from just 30 balls.
He hit eight boundaries before he was out caught behind off the bowling of Elijah Otieno. Upul Tharanga registered his fourth World Cup fifty off 54 balls and remained unbeaten on 67 runs that came from just 59 deliveries and included 12 fours. He raised 74 runs for the unbeaten second wicket with Kumar Sangakkara (27*).
Malinga was declared the man of the match for his six-wicket haul.
