Sri Lanka: Strengths: Sri Lanka’s best result in a World Cup has been their win in the 1996 tournament which was played in the sub-continent. The reason why I mention it here is because that is exactly the kind of conditions that the Sri Lankan side likes to play their cricket in – where the tracks are slow and low and assist spin bowlers from the word go. Will be hoping for an encore>

In fact, amongst the Asian sides as well, Sri Lanka is the best when it comes to battling away on such pitches and throttling the opposition with their barrage of spin bowlers and part-timers. That is surely going to be their strength. Will be the key>

Weakness: While the Sri Lankan batting is strong as well, it relies far too heavily on their top-order. There was Sanath Jayasuriya at one time and now there is Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga. But apart from these two and Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara at the three and four the rest of the line-up has not shown the same kind of talent. This has led to the loss of wickets in a hurry towards the end of the innings and the lack of acceleration that is usually needed there.

Players to watch out for: Sri Lanka will rely on the aforementioned top four apart from the bowling of their spinners. However, the one player who could make this stage his own may be Angelo Matthews with his ability to get the wickets and to score the runs rather quickly.

Matches against: Canada at Hambantota, Pakistan at Colombo, Kenya at Colombo, Australia at Colmbo, Zimbabwe at Pallekele, New Zealand at Mumbai.
