Pakistan crushed New Zealand in the third and the final T20I played at Christchurch on Thursday. With this win, Pakistan managed to go into the Test series with some confidence that would have been lacking had they lost the series 3-0. >
Pakistan batted first after they won the toss despite having lost the previous game doing the same. Shahid Afridi dropped himself down the order whilst dropping Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul from the side. Ahmed Shehzad opened the innings and smashed a 34-ball 54 in an 81-run first wicket stand with Mohammad Hafeez. >
Shehzad looked good throughout the innings and took most of the Kiwi bowlers to the cleaners as the Pakistanis repeated a smashing start. What was also not uncommon was the fact that the side lost their first wicket with the score reading 81 and proceeded to lose three more for the addition of 25 runs only – slumping to 106/4.
Umar Akmal was then joined by Abdul Razzaq and the pair smashed 47 runs in the last three overs to take the score to 183/6. 70 came in the last five overs and the Kiwis were left to chase a huge 184 for a win. Razzaq made a stunning 11-ball 34 after he was dropped very early in the innings.
In reply, the New Zealand side faced a procession. They lost their first wicket for one, second at two, third at two as well and by the time the captain Ross Taylor walked back as the fourth wicket, the score was only three.
It was never going to be easy to recover from the position of 3/4 and despite a 34-ball 45 from Scott Styris, the Kiwis were never in hunt and were bowled out for 80. Razzaq continued his form with the ball as to garner three wickets for 13 runs in four overs to win the man of the match award. Afridi picked up four wickets.
