Australia got to the final by overcoming New Zealand in the quarter-final and West Indies in the semi-finals. And both the games were exciting enough, which Australia came from behind to win.

In the quarter-final, New Zealand batted first and were propped by Chris Harris’ 130 and captain Lee Germon’s 89 that took the side to 286/9 in their 50 overs. Under normal circumstances, this would have been a rather difficult target to chase, but the Kiwis were handed a huge blow by the presence of dew at Chennai. Four wicket haul n 1996 semi-finals>

Mar Taylor departed early while Ricky Ponting scored 31 and was dismissed at 84. Shane Warne was sent up the order to play a few strokes and his 14-ball 24 allowed the Aussies to continue with the momentum and then, Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh were involved in a 86-run stand that won them the game. Mark scored 110 while Stuart Law chipped in the end with a 30-ball 42.

In the semi-final, Australia were bowled out for 207 in their 50 overs. Even that was possible thanks to Law and Michael Bevan’s half centuries in the end, after the side was 15/4 at one stage.

In reply, the West Indian side looked to be winning the game and were on their way to make it to the final. Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 80 had got West Indies to 165/2 but with only 43 needed off the last eight overs, Warne got three wickets to send the side packing.

West Indies lost their last eight wickets for 37 runs and were bundled out of the tournament.
