The first Test between India and New Zealand ended in a draw after day five failed to deliver the drama that the previous day had done. India played out the first two sessions losing just two wickets after being in a spot of bother at the end of the fourth day’s play. A maiden Test century from Harbhajan Singh and a priceless knock of 91 from VVS Laxman helped India save the game. >
Harbhajan was excellent in his knock of 115, showing great patience but also was not afraid in going for the shots when the opportunities came by. He hit 11 fours and three massive sixes in his innings and put on a 163 run partnership with VVS Laxman for the seventh wicket. >
Laxman and Harbhajan started the day with much patience. India were still in a precarious position on a track that was still good for batting. New Zealand missed a great run out chance early in the day but that was probably the only chance they got as well. It was Harbhajan who gave the innings some momentum with a couple of boundaries, and Laxman was happy in rotating the strike and whiling away the time.
India were playing for time and the overs were trickling by. They ended the first session of the day without losing a wicket. New Zealand were missing the services of Hamish Bennett and Jesse Ryder and had to make do with the part time bowling of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor.
The second session too was similar to the first session. However, just when the session was about to end, Daniel Vettori got Laxman before he got to his hundred and off the next ball got Zaheer Khan. However, both the batsmen had inside edged the ball onto their pads and were clearly not out. The decisions just added to the number of bad calls in this game, especially against India.
However, Harbhajan got to his hundred in style, lofting Vettori over long off for a huge six. When the teams went in for tea it was clear the game was headed for a draw. The last session lasted just an hour or so, and New Zealand ended on 22/1 as the captains decided to call it a draw.
