The 13th game of the Champions League T20 will see the Chennai Super Kings take on the Victorian Bushrangers at Port Elizabeth, in what should be one of the biggest clashes of the tournament. Chennai goes into the game having won both their games, but they were against the Central Stags and Wayamba. Victoria have played two and won one, losing to the Warriors and winning against the Stags. >
The Super Kings were thwarted early by the Stags in their first game, but the top-order came good in the second match that they played against Wayamba. It is highlight unlikely that the likes of Dirk Nannes and John Hastings will allow the Super Kings any liberties in their own halves of the track. This will mean that the likes of Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina, both of whom had scored half centuries in the previous game will need to come up with a plan B. >
That will also mean that the responsibility on Matthew Hayden’s shoulders is immense. It is very evident that Hayden has not been able to get the kind of form that has made him one of the most difficult batsmen to dismiss over the years. In the first game, he was dismissed off a short ball, and in the second he was lbw off a sweep shot. This does put a lot of pressure on the top order and it will be interesting to see how Hayden plays against a side he would have had the practice of playing throughout his career in domestic cricket.
One also get the feeling that the captain MS Dhoni may want to bat higher up the order.
For Victoria, it was the batting of Aaron Finch which had won them the previous game. He was cool and calculated and despite the asking rate creeping up to 12, he did not lose his temperament. However, he will need the injured Brad Hodge to make a comeback to the side, and give them a good start. Especially given that David Hussey hasn’t looked in the best of the touches.
This is potentially a cracker of a game which could go down to the wire.
