England beat Pakistan in the second T20I of the series at Cardiff to win the series 2-0. This was also England’s seventh successive win, and they will now go into the ODI series against Pakistan with much confidence. >
Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat first. In the previous game, they had scored only 125 in their 20 overs, and would have looked to score much more in this game. Incidentally, it was the spinning duo of Graeme Swann and Michael Yardy who had made scoring very difficult for the Pakistani side. In this game, Pakistan seemed to have come out with a strategy to take on the seam bowlers in order to get a move on and get to at least 140. >
As it turned out, batting against the fast bowler were haywire. Pakistan lost Kamran Akmal very early, to another pull shot, and even Shahzaib Hasan and Mohammad Yousuf were both set up by the short ball. Tim Bresnan had a couple of wickets and Stuart Broad had one, before the latter added to his wickets count when captain Shahid Afridi also tried to pull one across the line and was caught on the off-side.
22/4 became 44/5 when Umar Akmal smacked a couple of sixes, but was bowled by Swann, when he tried to repeat the dose for a third time. The rest of the batsmen not only struggled to preserve their wickets, but found scoring so difficult that they crashed to 89 all out in the 19th over.
Bresnan ended with 3/10, while Sidebottom, Broad and Swann had a couple of wickets each.
Chasing 90 for a win, England had a goodish start as the opening duo of Steven Davies and Craig Kieswetter added 26 for the first wicket off 14 balls. However, Shoaib Akhtar was steaming in at this stage, and he had Davies flicking one to the leg-side and into the hands of Umar Akmal. Akmal was at it again when he ran Kieswetter out off the very next ball to reduce England to 26/2, but first Paul Collingwood and Ravi Bopara, and then Michael Yardy and Eoin Morgan saw the English side through to a convincing win.
There were six overs to spare when Morgan slammed the winning runs, and made it 2-0. Bresnan’s three wicket haul won him the man of the match as well.
