India were handed a 200-run drubbing by New Zealand in the first ODI of the Micromax Cup tri-series at Dambulla. Chasing a target of 289 for a win, the Indian side were bowled out for a paltry 88, which was their worst ever defeat against New Zealand. What a fine win for New Zealand>

New Zealand batted first after winning the toss, and were soon in trouble when they lost three wickets for only 28 runs. The ball was swinging around and that meant that the pair of Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra were able to make the opening overs count. Well played by Styris>

Ross Taylor then got together with Scott Styris and tried to resurrect the innings. The innings run-rate was slow to begin with, but it began to take on the Indian bowlers once the hardness wore off. Both got to their 50s quickly, and then broke the record for the best ever partnership for New Zealand for the fourth wicket in ODIs. The pair added 190 runs in the end, and looked good for more when Styris was finally bowled by Pragyan Ojha, just 11 short of his century.

At the other end, even Taylor looked good for his century but on 95, he was caught plumb in front of the wicket. With two wickets gone in quick time, the tail barely wagged and the Kiwis collapsed from 218/3 to 288 all out with seven balls still to be bowled.

Chasing 289 under the Dambulla lights was never going to be easy with the kind of track dished up but Indian opening batsmen, Virender Sehwag and Dinesh Karthik made a good start to the innings. The pair added 39 for the first wicket in seven overs and it looked like Sehwag was getting his eye in for another long innings. Instead, Kyle Mills got one to bounce on him and he gloved it to the wicket-keeper which sent him packing.

With danger-man Sehwag out of the way, the rest of the side folded like nine pins. Most of the batsmen were caught while trying to guide the ball through slips, while MS Dhoni was run-out trying to attempt an impossible single.

In the end, Ravindra Jadeja scored a 20, which was the highest score for India as the side collapsed to 88 all out in less than 30 overs.

Taylor was declared the man of the match, but more importantly, the Kiwis got five points out of the game, thanks to the bonus point. Sri Lanka play New Zealand in the next game of the tri-series.
