India won the Asia Cup by beating Sri Lanka in the final of the tournament at Dambulla by a facile margin of 81 runs. >
Batting first, the Indians were off to a decent start when Gautam Gambhir and Dinesh Karthik added 38 in quick time. However, a lather lackadaisical running between the wickets by Gambhir saw him get out run-out. The innings was then resurrected by a second wicket stand of 62 between Karthik and Virat Kohli. Kohli was slow to start off with, but slowly regained his touch before playing away from his body and getting an edge to the wicket-keeper. >
MS Dhoni promoted himself up the order and got a move on, almost immediately, but it was the wicket of Karthik that would have upset the calculations. Karthik was well set on 66, and got a full-toss from part-time leggie, Thilina Kandamby, but was only able to deposit the ball into the hands of the fielder at fine-leg.
Dhoni departed soon after for 38, despite starts from all of the rest of the batsmen, the Indians managed to struggle to 268/6 in the fifty overs. Rohit Sharma scored 41.
The total was good but at one stage the Indians looked like they would have scored 300.
Fortunately for them, it proved to be much more than enough, as the Indian pace bowlers did what was expected out of them. Dangerman Dilshan was sent packing for a duck and from there, the likes of Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra only ended up messing their top-order. Zaheer picked up a couple, but it was Nehra who did maximum damage, getting four wickets including Jayawardene and Sangakkara.
In the end, there was a concerted effort by Chamara Kapugedera, but it went in vain as the side folded for 187 all out in the 45th over. Karthik’s half century won the man of the match whereas Shahid Afridi’s twin centuries and the few wickets won him the man of the series award.
