South Africa continued with their winning streak and won a rather close game to clean sweep the West Indies side, 5-0 in the ODI series. The South African side won by one wicket and with two balls to spare to record their third successive 5-0 win over West Indies.>
Batting first, the West Indian side lost both their openers early, including their captain Chris Gayle, but were rescued by Shivnarine Chanderpaul who made 67. The issue with his innings was that it took too many balls coming and that meant that by the time the West Indian side went into their last ten overs, they were only 162/5 and looking down the barrel. >
The game turned around for the hosts in the last ten overs, as Narsingh Deonarine, coming in for Sulieman Benn, smacked a 53-ball 53 while Kieron Pollard hit a couple of lusty blows (25 off 19 balls) to propel the side to 252/6 in the 50 overs.
This was a good total and with a decent bowling attack, even a match-winning one on a sluggish Queen’s Park Oval track but the West Indian side were without Benn – dropped presumably because of disciplinary issues – and with the expectation that the part-timers will do the job for them.
In reply, the South African side lost Graeme Smith early once again, but the in-form pair of Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis took the total up to 76 in the 14th over before the former was run-out. AB de Villiers failed to add to the mountain of runs that he has already had, but at 163/3 in the 31st over with JP Duminy also on his way to a half century, the game seemed as good as won.
Just at that time, Kallis departed, and this was followed by a deluge of wickets. Mark Boucher fell 12 runs later, while the late order did not contribute as quickly as they would have been expected to do.
The game swung again in West Indies’ favour, when Duminy was bowled by Jerome Taylor and then Botha and McLaren fell in quick succession with the score reading 235. 18 runs were needed off 14, and 17 off the last couple, when Dwayne Bravo conceded ten runs but took a wicket in the penultimate over.
With seven needed off the last over, Roelof van der Merwe hit Pollard for a four, and then, easily guided the side to a win. Kallis won the man of the match award, whereas Amla was declared the man of the series.
