Australia gave Sri Lanka a thrashing of their lives, when they beat the Island nation by 81 runs in the 8th game of the Super Eights stage of the ICC World T20. With this convincing win, the side is almost through to the semi-finals of the tournament, whereas Sri Lanka now needs to beat India and hope that Australia take care of West Indies. >
Australia batted first after winning the toss and were off to a disastrous start. They lost Shane Watson in the very first over of the innings, and then, despite some smacking blows by Brad Haddin, he was also sent back by the same bowler, Angelo Mathews to reduce the side to 20/2 in the third over. >
Dave Warner had surprisingly had a slower start to his innings, and the first shot that he played in anger took the outside edge and landed safely in the hands of the slip. Randiv stuck again, off the very next ball when he had David Hussey stumped off a straighter one, and that meant that the side was at 30/4 and Randiv on a hat-trick.
Michael Clarke was then joined by Cameron White and while the hat-trick was averted, the Australian captain scored a painfully slow 14 off 20 balls before being sent back to leave the Aussies at 67/5 in the 11th over. It did look like the Australian side would not be able to get to much more than 140 given the manner in which the side looked to capitulating.
However, at this stage, much like it was the case in the Bangladesh game, Michael Hussey and Cameron White (85) provided for some late order exploits as the two smothered both their main bowlers, Ajantha Mendis and Lasith Malinga, for the death overs and got the score moving to a big total.
White smacked six sixes and six fours, and Hussey gave him good company to get the side to 168/5, as the two sides had added 101 for the sixth wicket.
In reply, the Sri Lankans were never in the hunt, when the pair of Mahela Jayawardene and Sanath Jayasuriya were both sent back, and so was the captain Kumar Sangakkara. Tillakaratne Dilshan did provide some relief with a 12-ball 20, but that remained the highest score for Sri Lanka while the rest of them collapsed to an 87 all out.
This resounding loss gives India some hope as they will now look to beat Sri Lanka as well by 20 runs and try and get through to the next round.
