The McGilvray Medal is known to be an annual award which is presented to the player by the ABC Radio. The player is adjudged by the Grandstand commentary team as the best Australian Cricketer of the preceding year. This medal is named in honor of the legendary cricketer, Alan McGilvray, who was a long time ABC cricket commentator too.
2004 winner of the McGilvray Medal
In 2004, the medal was awarded to Damien Martyn, as he scored 1353 runs with an average of 56.37. He made 6 centuries and 5 half centuries. Martyn was presented this medal by the Australian prime Minister, John Howard. This event took place during the SCG Test match held in 2005.
2005 winner of the McGilvray Medal
In the year 2005, the medal was awarded to Shane Warne for his marvelous record breaking of 96 wickets at 22.02 averages. This even included 40 wickets at 19.92 in the Ashes series held in England in 2005.
2006 to 2008 winners of the McGilvray Medal
The McGilvray Medal was presented in 2006 to Ricky Ponting, after he led the Australian cricket team to almost 10 consecutive test match victory in 2005 and scored 1,333 runs at an average of 88.86. In 2007, the medal was awarded to Brett Lee at the start of the second day’s game at the Adelaide Oval. Lee scored 41 wickets at an average of 18.58 in 6 test matches.
In 2009, the Australian fast pacer Mitchell Johnson was presented with the McGilvray Medal award. He won this award on his scoring 360 runs at 22.5 and taking 63 wickets in 14 test matches at an average of 29.01 in the previous year. In 2010, he was again awarded with this medal for his successive wickets and runs scored in 2009.
