Chennai Super Kings rode on Murali Vijay’s stunning century to post their fourth win in the IPL at the Chepauk in Chennai over Rajasthan Royals. The run-fest saw the Super Kings win bby 23 runs despite scoring a mammoth 246/5 in the 20 overs. >
The Chennai side won the toss and expectedly decided to bat first in hot and humid conditions. Both, Murali Vijay and Mathew Hayden were off to a quick start and added 62 for the first wicket. Again, much like the previous game, it was Vijay who went after the bowling from the word go and Hayden, was a relative pedestrian. >
Hayden soon got his timing right and started to go after the bowling, but just when one thought he was regaining his touch, he was dismissed by Shrikant Wagh for 34. This was after Wagh had been hit for three boundaries in the same over.
Shane Warne brought himself on, and got the better of Suresh Rain, and at this stage the Chennai side had a run-rate of around ten runs per over; 83/2 in the ninth.
It was here that MS Dhoni made a master move, as he sent Albie Morkel up the order at the number four position.
Morkel took some time to get going, but once he had done so, in the company of Murali Vijay, went on a boundary hitting spree. It was in the 12th over that 16 runs came and after this it was followed by another 16, 22 and 19 off the next three to get Chennai to 170/2! Sumit Narwal had conceded 15 off his first over and was called back to bowl the 16th over which went for four sixes in the over!
Murali Vijay completed his century whereas Morkel got to his fifty, as the pair smacked a partnership of 152 runs that came off only 66 balls! Chennai broke the record for the highest total in the IPL ever to get to 246/5 and the Rajasthan side were left wondering whether they were actually as ordinary as Gambhir made them out to be.
The chase was almost as spectacular for the Rajasthan Royals as first Michael Lumb and Naman Ojha added 69 in the eighth over and then, despite a superb Doug Bollinger catch of Yusuf Pathan, kept getting the runs. Shane Watson and Ojha smashed the bowling around enough to get the score up to 177/2 in 15 overs.
This meant that the Royals needed 70 runs off the last five overs and with seven wickets in hand and a pitch that was as flat as a pancake. However, Watson then got out at that wrong time, and despite Ojha getting to 94 off 55 balls and remaining unbeaten, the side could not get to the requisite total; falling 23 runs short.
Vijay was declared the man of the match for his scintillating century.
