Thursday’s second game of the day will see the Mumbai Indians play the Chennai Super Kings at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Mumbai Indians have won three of their four games except one against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, whereas the Chennai Super Kings will look to snap their two-match losing streak after having won two in succession. >
The Chennai side will obviously be bolstered by the return of MS Dhoni, who was injured in the second game that Chennai had played in the tournament. His return will almost invariably mean that the batting is strengthened in the middle, one of the major problems for Chennai in the last couple of games. This will also mean that one of the two, Parthiv Patel or Murali Vijay will be dropped to make way for the side. >
The bowling, on the other hand, has looked decent, but it does look like the time is ripe to change things around. Shadab Jakati could be called up to bowl in place of R Ashwin, who seems to be going for a few runs.
Mumbai Indians do not have too many selection woes yet, but they will be a trifle wary, if not worried about the form of Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard. Both the West Indian players have been a bit under the hammer for some time now, and this will be a good game to assert their authority. One cannot expect the really in-form Sachin Tendulkar to keep getting the runs all the time and this will be the time to pick up the gauntlet for them.
The one surprising bit is that Abhishek Nayar is yet to make his IPL debut this tournament, and this could be the match that he will be tried. Aditya Tare’s batting may be reasonably good, but his wicket-keeping has let the side down with the amount of extras conceded and that will be a big question-mark.
To me, Mumbai would looked like favourites in the absence of MS Dhoni, with the Chennai captain back, it is difficult not to bet on Chennai, who go into the game at 11/8 (William Hill) as compared to Mumbai (4/6 at Stan James)
