Rajasthan Royals beat the Kings XI Punjab in the 20th game of the IPL at Mohali by 31 runs to record their second win of the tournament. Punjab remain at the bottom position with one win from five games. >
The Kings XI Punjab won the toss and decided to field first on a pitch that was expected to offer much assistance to the pace bowlers. Punjab had gone in with one change to their line-up taking in Sreesanth in place of Ramesh Powar and despite the strong start provided by Naman Ojha and Michael Lumb, it was Sreesanth who got the breakthrough. He induced Ojha to play the stroke in the air to mid-off where the fielder pouched a simple catch. >
A rather animated Sreesanth then sent the batsman away with some verbals.
At the other end, Lumb seemed to have got his much vaunted form back, something that he is known for in this format and thus vindicated his captain’s decision to pick him. He smacked seven boundaries and was off to a 30-ball 41, and in the company of Faiz Fazal took the score up to 60 in seven overs before Piyush Chawla foxed him with a delivery that saw him being stumped.
Yusuf Pathan came in, and was immediately dropped by his brother Irfan, but he lasted only enough to smack a four and a six before he was caught in the deep while attempting a similar stroke off a slower one from Shalabh Srivastava.
Fazal was managing his part rather well when he was joined by the hard-hitting Adam Voges. Voges had performed well even in Royals’ previous win over Kolkata, and despite not really hitting the ball long, he found the gaps rather well and propelled the score along with some big overs towards the end. Juan Theron was difficult to get away, but Voges cracked a 24-ball 45 to take the Rajasthan total to 183/5 in the twenty overs. Fazal also scored 45 but was a tad slower and took 38 balls to do so.
In reply, Ravi Bopara and Kumar Sangakkara opened the innings and got the side off to a flier. While Sangakkara did overdo his aggression bit and was finally caught in the fourth over, Manvinder Bisla, promoted up the order took charge and threatened to take the game away from the Royals with a cracking 18-ball 35.
There was some outrageous hitting by Bisla and even when he got out, the Punjab side was firmly favourites to win the game, requiring only 99 runs off 73 balls and with eight of their wickets intact.
Unfortunately, Yuvraj Singh failed to get going with the bat, and with Ravi Bopara struggling for runs in his 26-ball essay, the things began to get difficult. Yuvi was dropped once by Michael Lumb but he played an extremely irresponsible shot after that to be caught off the bowling of Triwedi while the rest of the batsmen just could not attain the needed momentum.
Apart from Jayawardene, the rest of the middle and lower-middle order collapsed without getting into double digits as the Rajasthanis won by 31 runs. Voges’ unbeaten 45 off 24 balls and two overs for only 12 runs won him the man of the match.
