Kolkata Knight Riders winning streak in the tournament was ended by a rather lacklustre performance as they lost their game against Chennai Super Kings by 55 runs.
Played at the Eden Gardens, the Chennai Super Kings batted first after winning the toss. The rationale behind Dhoni’s decision was that they were a better batting side and hence needed to take advantage of their batting. >
Murali Vijay and Mathew Hayden opened for the side, but Hayden scratched around for a little before being dismissed for 1. He was cleaned up off an inside edge off the bowling of Ishant Sharma. Suresh Raina joined Murali Vijay and the pair looked to be in decent touch, but were a tad slow off the blocks. >
Unfortunately, both fell within a couple of runs of each other to leave the Super Kings in much trouble. Vijay tried to smack Laxmi Ratan Shukla in the same manner that he had off the previous ball but was bowled off an inside edge, whereas Raina had just got used to the conditions of the pitch and the ground when he tried to slog Brad Hodge out of the park and was bowled. At 55/3 the Chennai team looked to be in trouble and could have been in more of it when captain Dhoni was dropped by the wicket-keeper.
There was no respite for the Kolkata Knight Riders after that, as Dhoni combined with Badrinath and the pair added a century-run partnership. Apart from that dropped catch there was also an injury to Dhoni on his elbow apart from a collision between the two while running between the wickets. However, the pair added 109 at almost ten runs per over to propel the score to 164/3 in the twenty overs.
In reply, the Kolkata side was off to a bad start, with Hodge gone for a duck this time around. Manoj Tiwari also failed to recapture his previous game’s form as he slammed two boundaries but was bowled off the third ball, while the pair of Saha and Ganguly kept the hopes alive only for the former to be bowled by L Balaji.
After that, it was a carnage; as Owais Shah, Ganguly, Mathews and the rest of the tail just fell apart for almost nothing to their name and the side collapsed to 109 all out.
Justin Kemp ended with three wickets off his three overs whilst conceding 12 runs and the man of the match was MS Dhoni.
