Australia ended the second day of the third test match against Pakistan on a high of having scored more than 500 in their first innings and getting rid of four Pakistani wickets rather cheaply. The game is being played at Hobart in Tasmania. >
Batting first, the Aussies had ended the first day at 302/3 and the fourth wicket stand between Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke continued to blossom on this second day as well. Both continued batting their unabashed approach and entered lunch without being separated and with the total on 392. >
Clarke surpassed his highest score in Tests, whereas Ponting neared his double century. It was only with the stand reading more than 350 that Clarke was bowled by Danish Kaneria; leaving alone a delivery that pitched outside the leg-stump and spun like a cobra.
Ponting completed his double century, as the Australian side went after the bowling in quest for some quick runs. They did lose some wickets on the way, as Ponting, Marcus North and Bad Haddin all fell to Kaneria and co. In the end, the Aussies declared, keeping with their strategy of not batting through to bigger totals, on 519/8.
In reply, Pakistan started well with a half century stand between Imran Farhat and Salman Butt. Both looked unruffled and for most periods seemed to have gotten the better of the bowling. It was only when Farhat edged behind off Peter Siddle that things began to happen for the side.
New-comer Khurram Manzoor, who had replaced Faisal Iqbal in the side, was caught in the slips for a duck, and then Butt was involved in two run-outs. Mohammad Yousuf was the first to go, while trying to attempt a third run whereas Umar Akmal was the fourth batsman out. In the end, Pakistan ended with 94/4, having lost their four wickets for a paltry addition of 21 runs!
