Sri Lanka beat India by five wickets with two overs to spare in the second ODI of the tri-series. With this win, the Lankans go up to the top of the table with two wins from two games, whereas both India and Bangladesh are now without any point from the sole game that they have played against the Lankans.
Sri Lanka won their second successive toss and as expected, decided to field first thanks to the expected dew. India begun well after the loss of Gautam Gambhir, and got off to more than 60 in the seventh over before Chanaka Welegedara stuck twice off successive overs to get rid of Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli. >
There was a reasonable stand between MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh and at one stage when the Indians were 170/3 in the 32nd over, the score of 300 looked very possible. As it turned out, Dhoni departed to an excellent catch off Kumar Sangakkara, and the Indians collapsed down the order. >
Yuvraj made a well-compiled 74 in his comeback game, whereas there were contributions from Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja, but it was not enough to propel the score to more than 300. In the end, the Indians had to be happy with a 280 to their name.
In reply, the absence of T. Dilshan did not seem to bother the Sri Lankans much, as the opening pair added 48 for the first wicket off eight overs. New comer Lahiru Thirmanne did get out, but Sangakara continued with his sublime form, and in the partnership with Thilan Samaraweera, got the Lankans off the blocks and towards the finish line.
Samaraweera played a very matured innings, and despite Sangakkara and Thilina Kandamby’s untimely loss, guided the team through. He was, of course, helped by Thissara Perrera who smashed the bowling to all parts of the park during the batting Powerplay to get to a 15-ball 36.
Samaraweera, at the other end, completed his century and went on to win the man of the match. With this, the Lankans are almost through to the final, and only a miracle will see anything contrary to that happen.
