The first day of the Ranji Trophy semi-finals saw the batsmen dominate the day’s proceedings after an early loss in each of the games. Well Played for a century>

In the first semi-final, Mumbai took on Delhi. Batting first after winning the toss at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, the hosts lost their prolific run-getter, Wasim Jaffer, early off the bowling of India’s pace bowler, Ishant Sharma. And then, after Sahil Kukreja was out, Sharma stuck again to get rid of the other accumulator of runs this season, Ajinkya Rahane as well to leave the Mumbai side struggling at 86/3 in a crucial semi-final like this. Karnataka hopes lie on him>

It was here that Omkar Khanvilkar was joined by the out-of-form and out-of-side Abhishek Nayar and the pair added a whopping 143 runs. Khanvilkar did miss out on his century, but Nayar did not as the hosts ended the first day at 329/4 thanks to Ajit Agarkar’s half century.

In the other semi-final, Karnataka lost Robin Uthappa for 32, before the recovery came in the form of KB Pawan (52), G. Satish (49) and an unbeaten 33 from their captain, Rahul Dravid. However, the man of the day for the Karnataka side was Manish Pandey, who could have easily gone ahead and smashed a century; instead getting out for 66.

Karnataka was 255/4 by the time the stumps were drawn on the first day.
