Sri Lanka beat India by a narrow margin of three wickets and with only five balls to spare at Nagpur to equal the series 1-1. With three more matches to go, the series is very interestingly poised now, and the third ODI will be played at the Barbati Stadium in Cuttack. >
Batting first, India piled on 301/7 in their fifty overs, thanks to captain MS Dhoni’s century. It was a chancy innings, with the captain being dropped thrice and having had his stumping missed as well. At the other end, he was involved in partnerships with two youngsters, Suresh Raina (68 off 55) and Virat Kohli (54 off 65), as India overcame a rather sluggish start to post their 300. >
Virender Sehwag was consumed in the first over of the game by Chanaka Welegedara, whereas Gautam Gambhir collided with the same bowler at the non-striker’s end to find himself short of the crease. Sachin Tendulkar looked good for his 43, but then gave Ajantha Mendis the charge and was stumped easily by Sangakkara to leave India tottering at 81/3 in the 17th on a placid looking track.
The target of 302 could have been tricky but Tillakaratne Dilshan dispelled any such notions. He smacked his second successive ODI century; a 123 off 113 balls to seal the game for his side. He was also ably supported by everyone else; Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilina Kandamby and Angelo Mathews, all of whom scored 20s and 30s to guide the side home.
Sri Lanka never let the asking rate creep up too much beyond 6.5 runs per over, and in the end the win proved to be rather easy coming.
Dilshan’s century won him the man of the match award, as he will now look to continue and smash his third continuous ton in ODIs.
