Australia ended the first day of the first test match against West Indies on 322/5 at Gabba in Brisbane. Five of the Aussie batsmen got starts, including the unbeaten Marcus North, but there was not a single one who converted it into something more meaningful. Could have got to a century>

Winning the toss and batting first, the Aussies lost Shane Watson for a duck, but Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting saw the team off to lunch without much further ado. Both got to their fifties, and were looking good for a three figure mark when Ponting was then claimed by Kemar Roach for 55. The man under a lot of pressure, Michael Hussey came into bat, but there were barely any visible nerves with him.Two vital wickets in the middle>

As if to prove that he is not called Mr. Cricket for nothing, Hussey slammed a fifty, and thus continued the kind of form he had shown on the Indian trip. At the other end, Katich got to 92, before Dwayne Bravo had him snapped by the wicket-keeper, while Hussey scored a patient 66 at the other end. When he was caught and bowled by Sulieman Benn, the score read 253/4. Impressed with his pace>

Michael Clarke was in his comeback international as well, after having missed four months of cricket due to a back spasm and he looked good for his 41. However, he slashed at a wide one from Bravo at the fag end of the day to have Chris Gayle snatch a beauty and have the Aussies struggling a little at 287/5.

Marcus North and Brad Haddin saw the day without any further loss. North was not out on 42 when the stumps were drawn.
