The fifth World Cup held in 1992 was also known as the Benson & Hedges World Cup was played from 22 February till 25 February and was played in Australia. There was a round-robin stage followed by the semi-finals and a final match. Pakistan won the tournament and clinched the title of World Champions.
The 1992 World Cup was the first ever Cup to feature colored uniforms for teams apart from while balls and black screens. This format was used in one-day international matches since 1970, but never in World Cup tournaments. This was also the first time that the World Cup was to be played in the southern hemisphere.
Format
A new format of game was introduced in the 1992 Cup. A complete round robin was to be played instead of playing two qualifying rounds. In late 1991, the South Africa team was re-admitted to the ICC (International Cricket Council) and 36 round robin matches to be played excluding the semi-finals and finals. >
Another format that changed was the way to calculate the target score for the batting team in case of a rain-affected match. According to the new rule, the score will now be calculated by the āhighest scoring oversā formula. If the batting team had 44 overs available then their target score would be one higher than total score of 44 highest scoring overs of the first innings.
Teams
The 8 teams that participated in the World Cup included Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka West Indies and Zimbabwe. Except South Africa and Zimbabwe, all the other teams were test teams. South Africa was to play their first test after the World Cup against West Indies and Zimbabwe was to play their first test much later in 1992.
ā ## Round Robin Stage
New Zealand came up with a surprise for all by winning the first 7 games and finishing at the top of the round robin chart. Thought being a pre-favorite, Australia lost its first 2 matches and won 4 of the remaining 6 ones. The 4 teams to qualify for the semis were New Zealand, England, South Africa and Pakistan.
Semi Finals
The first semi-final between England and South Africa was controversial because of a rain delay. The required run rate, according to the new rule, was increased from 22 runs from 13 balls to 21 runs from 1 ball. South Africa succumbed to this impossible target and got washed out of the tournament. In the second semi-final, New Zealand lost to Pakistan to repeat the round robin match result.
Finals
The final match of the 1992 World Cup was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCC) between Pakistan and England where England fell short of 22. Pakistan batted first to score 249 runs losing 6 wickets. England went onto the field confident to bar Pakistanās victory-run, but were at a loss of words when Graeme Hich fell for a googly by Mustaq Ahmed. The remaining players tried their best but only managed 227 runs before reaching to a dead end.
Pakistan was crowned the Champions of the World Cup for the first time. Martin Crowe from New Zealand was the top most run scorer of the tournament and Wasim Akram from Pakistan was the leading wicket taker.
